Terra Centuria is not just an agricultural cooperative – we are a community of passionate olive growers dedicated to preserving the ancient wisdom of olive oil production through modern science. Our cooperative, founded on principles of sustainability and excellence, produces extra virgin olive oils that rank among the world’s finest in quality and health-promoting properties.
About High-Phenolic Olive Oils
Our olive oils are not just a culinary delight but also a health elixir, containing exceptionally high levels of beneficial polyphenols. Polyphenols (also known as biophenols) are natural antioxidants with preventive and therapeutic effects on numerous health conditions. Scientific studies have shown that high-polyphenol olive oils help reduce inflammation, protect the heart, exhibit antimicrobial properties, prevent cancer, support brain health, and promote overall well-being.
Storage of High-Phenolic Olive Oils
Generally, the lower the temperature, the better the positive qualities of olive oil (aroma, taste, and health-beneficial polyphenols) are preserved. However, it is important to ensure that the temperature of the oil (bottle) does not fluctuate excessively, as this can cause condensation inside the bottles and lead to faster degradation of the oil’s beneficial compounds. For long-term storage, temperatures between 5°C and -20°C are recommended. If we do not want the oil to solidify, it can also be stored at higher temperatures (12-15°C). After opening the bottle, the oil should be stored in a dark and slightly cooler place (16-20°C) until consumption.
Shelf Life of High-Phenolic Olive Oils
In the past, extra virgin olive oils were required to have a shelf life of 18 months. Nowadays, most producers can determine the shelf life themselves. High-phenolic olive oils are particularly known for their exceptionally long shelf life when properly stored. If the olive oil is professionally processed and filtered using high-quality filters, it is not uncommon to find fresh aromas and no defects even 5-10 years after production.
Unfiltered olive oils, on the other hand, are much more unpredictable. Defects may appear within just one month, even if they were not initially present, and most of the polyphenols degrade quickly.
Consumption of High-Polyphenol Olive Oils
The official recommendation for consuming olive oil to achieve its health benefits states that the beneficial effect is achieved with a daily intake of 20 grams of olive oil. Additionally, it is important to maintain a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
For the prevention or treatment of specific health issues, it is best to consult your personal physician and review findings or recommendations from the latest research.
How Many Polyphenols Are in Extra Virgin Olive Oils?
On average, fresh cold-pressed extra virgin olive oils contain around 300 mg of polyphenols per kilogram of oil. Extra virgin olive oils available on store shelves typically have around 150 mg of polyphenols per kilogram of oil.
All Terra Centuria oils consistently contain more than 500 mg of polyphenols per kilogram of oil throughout the season, while the Health+ oil can exceed even 2000 mg of polyphenols per kilogram of oil.
How Do Terra Centuria Oils Differ from Others?
Authenticity:
The foundation of our philosophy of early harvesting and processing of green olives is knowledge rooted in antiquity. The ancient Greeks and Romans were already aware of the medicinal properties of such oils, which were rare and highly prized. We combine this ancient knowledge with modern olive processing technologies using cold extraction methods, enabling us to capture the true essence of the fruit, which is exceptionally rich in beneficial compounds.
Sustainable Organic Farming:
Our cooperative values eco-friendly practices, promotes biodiversity, and protects the natural resources of our region. Our olive groves, located in the Slovenian Istria, are a biodiversity treasure. In addition to cultivating over 50 olive varieties, many of our groves also host ponies and poultry, which help maintain soil fertility. We strive to coexist naturally with the wildlife that regularly visits our groves. All our products are certified organic.
Community-Oriented Approach:
With every Terra Centuria product you purchase, you support local farmers, preserve centuries-old knowledge, encourage new research, and provide fair opportunities for development.
